Bognor Regis Town FC the Beginning
Bognor Regis Town the beginning.
The first that I saw of the place id soon call home was 1week after me and my family moved from Woking to North Bersted in Bognor Regis. Our kids where with family while we got settled so I could meet Sophie from work while walking the Dog rather than pushing a double buggy. I was painting their bedrooms while she worked and avoided a paintbrush. I knew of the club, I knew where it was as I had walked past before on way to beach as we looked at the area but hadn’t been in there yet. I went looking for a shortcut to Sophie’s work finding an alleyway through the housing estate, which also passed the large cemetery and church. I wasn’t a hundred percent sure where I was going just knew the general direction to head. As the alleyway ended I saw the club I did know it was about here didn’t expect to come straight out onto it.
There was a gateway with no gate, it was very tall you could fit an artic through it. The metal work was all painted in Green, attached was a wooden sign to the right hand side high up but with clear writing in white saying “Next Fixture” although the sign was blank I knew it wouldn’t be to long until it had a game listed. There was one on the top left but I didn’t see what it said as we passed making sure we didn’t get run over. At the top there was two white signs welcoming you to Nyewood Lane the home of Bognor Regis Town FC.
On the Left hand side their was an alleyway I knew that’s where I needed to go although did debate heading in the club to have a look around but didn’t want to meet people I was going to be sending my CV to, they may have not been to impressed that I had just walked in off the street and with a dog. The dog had found something to sniff and was very hard dragging her forward so left her to it while I looked on Wikipedia “The playing surface is arguably one of the finest in non-league football and won an award for the best in all three divisions of the Conference in 2008.” If I couldn’t get on the coaching team I could always use my gardening experience I thought to myself.
I carried on walking hoping to see over the wall it was quite old very well built id say about 7ft tall and apart from the spot lights which at some point had according to Wiki had come from Wembely I couldn’t see much more apart from some old out buildings. There where two gates in it but still couldn’t see much of it. I carried on to Sophs work dog in tow.
The next day I added all I could about the club to my Facebook feed I saw that they where inviting people down to help tidy up the land they owned seemed like the perfect opportunity to get involved and hopefully meet the right people. As I looked into the league doing my research for that day I learnt a lot and quickly when the day came I was ready. I had ideas on everything although I knew a lot about the players I hadn’t actually seen a full game with them involved very little on youtube even these days.
I turned up half hour early in the attempt to have a closer look to the place I eventually found someone introducing myself apologizing if I where to early was just keen to crack on. Didn’t say it was because I was avoiding extra decorating at home. He was dressed in a suit obviously not here for the clear up unless this was an old suit and that’s how he did gardening work. He welcomed me to the club but the man seemed a little distracted at this point, he pointed me in the right direction I must admit I had hoped for some sort of tour but he looked very busy.
I waited around which seemed longer than it actually was I had a CV with me that I planned on handing to the highest up the tree that I could. I then meet the receptionist who paired me off with another guy who had been a fan for years. Time to put my knowledge to the test in an attempt to test myself I made out I have followed them for quite some aswell. He was a nice bloke loved the team very proud of the place and their involvement in the area. Which is rare no one spoke so highly of the club at Woking on days like this where I coached for 2 years.
He also said one thing that interested me but I ignored it, He told me his wife’s friends dinner dates with the current manager and that his wife put on Facebook that they where looking for a place to rent in Portsmouth. My reply was rude so I kept it to myself, “Yeah my wife’s friends, cousins dinner dates with Lionel Messi and his wife, hes a huge Bognor fan aswell.” But he seemed pretty convinced there was an opening for manager. We spent all morning there with the planned day ending at 12 just so they didn’t feel obligated to offer lunch I guess at the end we all got together and people chatting away about current season. The person who I spoke to when i first arrived came out of the offices and starting mixing I asked my new friend who had the Facebook link who he was he informed me he was the chairman Mr Kingsley Wadrle.
When he came to use I asked if I could have a quick chat with him and he obliged I passed him my CV explaining my previous History as a Youth coach at Tottenham for 6 months along with First Team at BSS when the team won the division and all over past experience and badges telling him that I was looking to coach and would love the opportunity here at this club to be part something special. I showed him a covering letter, which was perfect notes on the current players what id like to see and also that of potential transfer targets and notes on the league I was proud of the letter. Said I didn’t expect an answer but it had all my contact details at the bottom if there is ever a vacancy id love a chance for an interview he nodded agreed and promised to read through it once he had the time. I wasn’t hopeful but knew the covering letter would impress if it didn’t just get binned.
A few days had past and I had started Job-hunting elsewhere thinking of starting a local football team if I can find the interest out there. On my way to post a few CV’s I had a phone call from Kingsley Wadrle I was very surprised when he said who he was, I had assumed that the CV went in the bin. He had an exciting offer that he wanted to talk to me about and asked when I could get to the club offices to speak to him and a few board members. I told him within the hour as long as there is no real dress code as suit is still in a suitcase somewhere in the spare room, if he had read my CV he knew we hadn’t lived here for a month yet, he laughed and said that he would see me at 2 o’clock. I had an hour and a half enough time to Iron a shirt and walk to the club that was 45mins away as Sophie had taken the Car as she does on a 12-hour shift.
I had got to the Offices made my introduction apologized for just a shirt and jeans explaining the move as the excuse. But what shocked me the most is that I was going to have to tell the biggest fan in Bognor that his sources where correct I am sure he will now be the new Isthmian IDK agent on Twitter. The past manager had taken a first team-coaching role at Portsmouth It left the role of manager available here and I was being interviewed for it, my covering letter had made a huge impression. I hadn’t managed at any level it was always my ambition but felt I need to work more in coaching first. I explained my style of football and they where all interested in how where and what would be needed expected from the team and players. I wanted to work with the youth maybe try and build our own academy and explained with a few signings we could have a young team that wouldn’t need much over the next 4-5 years.
Then came the bad news the reason the last manager left the club where in financial trouble 325k in debt and it was going to struggle to make the funds available they offered some for wages but not a huge amount. Spending so much on the ground and team that got them promoted to the Isthmian the previous season had taken its toll on the club. This was the reason I was being given my shot the reason that there was no experienced manager in the frame the reason I was swearing in my head but then after a min of debating running from the place Barney Stinson popped into my head CHALLENGE ACCEPTED and of course I was going to take it I always did. My mates always used to wait till I had, had a few then challenge me to many a stupid suggestion on a night out I didn’t deny it then nor would I know sober as a judge.
We chatted about possible ideas and said id do all I could to win it in prize money thinking that promotion or a good cup run would sort us out. The board offered me the job there and then, they had a contract drawn up and I signed it. They explained it was only a years contract and that I would need to prove myself worthy of an extension and pay rise as it was quite low but luckily Emma was paid well enough that my pay wasn’t major and she didn’t work weekends anyway., A press conference was set up for Monday to announce me very little was done on a Sunday usually in the off season but I had a lot to start planning. The thing that scared me the most is that every player had a price and although this is true for everyone (Look at Bale) the prices are going to be a lot lower than the ones I would try to command for them.
This is all a story to go along with my FM13 save and is in no way real or about real people.
